چکیده

Residual feed intake (RFI), defined as the differences between observed and expected feed intake based on growth and backfat, has been used to select for improved feed efficiency in beef cattle, poultry, and now swine. However, little is known about the main biological factors that contribute to the variation in RFI in swine. The objectives of the experiments in this thesis were to compare the 5 th generation of a line of pigs selected for reduced RFI (Select) against a randomly selected control (Control) line for performance parameters and to examine the biological contribution of visceral mass, carcass and chemical carcass composition, and predicted maintenance requirements on the overall efficiency during two stages of growth: the early post-weaning period (EGP) and late growth period (LGP) prior to market weight. In both experiments, Select and Control line pigs were paired based on age (~65 and 132 d for EGP and LGP, respectively) and weight (23.9±4.2 and 74.8±9.9 kg, respectively) and the pairs were randomly assigned to one of four feeding level treatments: 1) ad libitum (Ad); 2) 75% of Ad (Ad75); 3) 55% of Ad (Ad55); and 4) weight stasis to maintain a constant body weight (WS). In both experiments (EGP and LGP), pigs were individually penned and on feed treatment for 6 weeks. Overall, under Ad feeding, the Select line consumed 8 to 10% (p < 0.09) less feed compared to the Control, with no significant difference in weekly BW (p < 0.80). In general, the Select line under the Ad treatment had less backfat and carcass fat % but no other significant differences in carcass chemical composition. Under restricted feeding, the Select line had an increase in BW (p = 0.10) while consuming the same amount of feed as the Control, in both experiments. Furthermore, no significant differences in carcass chemical composition were found. The Select line had

Effects of ad libitum and restricted feed intake on growth performance and body composition of Yorkshire pigs selected for reduced residual feed intake.

Residual feed intake (RFI), defined as the difference in the observed and expected feed intake while accounting for growth and backfat, has gained much attention, but little is known about why pigs selected for reduced RFI are more efficient. To this end, a line of Yorkshire pigs selected for reduced RFI was developed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the 5th generation of this selec...

Effects of lactation feed intake and creep feeding on sow and piglet performance.

A total of 84 sows (PIC Line 1050) were blocked according to day of farrowing and parity and allotted in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with lactation feed intake (ad libitum vs. restricted) and creep feeding (no vs. yes) as factors. Sows fed for ad libitum intake (ad libitum-fed) were allowed free access to a common lactation diet (3,503 kcal of ME/kg, 0.97% standardized ileal dig...

Growth performance, feed digestibility, body composition, and feeding behavior of high- and low-residual feed intake fat-tailed lambs under moderate feed restriction.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of moderate feed restriction on productivity of lambs classified on the basis of phenotypic expression of residual feed intake (RFI). In Exp. 1, 58 fat-tailed Kurdi ram lambs (32.1 ± 4.2 kg BW) were individually fed, ad libitum, a pelleted diet (35% alfalfa hay and 65% concentrate). Feed intake and ADG were determined for a 6-wk period and 3...

The role of feed consumption and feed efficiency in copper-stimulated growth.

Two experiments were conducted to study the role of feed intake and feed efficiency in Cu-stimulated growth of weanling pigs. In Exp. 1, 42 pigs were randomly assigned into three treatments: 1) control: ad libitum access to a corn-soybean meal-dried whey basal diet; 2) ad libitum/Cu: ad libitum access to the basal diet supplemented with 215 ppm of Cu; or 3) pair-fed/Cu: pair-fed the Cu-suppleme...

Effects of Restricted Feeding on Performance, Carcass Quality and Hormone Profiles in Finishing Barrows

To investigate the effects of feeding restricted on growth, carcass characteristics and plasma profiles in an attempt for optimum responses, a total of 108 cross-bred finishing barrows [(Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc]weighing an average of 46.88±0.52 kg were assigned in a randomized complete block (RCB) design to one of four treatments with three replicates and nine pigs per pen. Feeding regimens w...
